On October 7, 2022, following a proposal by the French Physical Society, the Institute for Scientific Studies of Cargèse (IESC) in Corsica received the prestigious designation of “Historic Site” from the European Physical Society (EPS). The IESC has played a major role in shaping generations of physicists, and its international influence is undeniable. Many Nobel Prize laureates have stayed there as young researchers or lecturers. Over the past ten years, numerous historic sites have been designated by the EPS, including five in France (the Radium Institute at the Curie Institute in Paris, the LAL-LURE accelerator in Orsay, the Refuge des Cosmiques in Chamonix, the Les Houches School of Physics, and the Ampère House in Lyon).

The IESC has thus become the sixth historic site in France and the 66th historic site of the EPS. The commemorative plaque was inaugurated by Luc Bergé, researcher at the CEA and President of the EPS, and Guy Wormser for the SFP, in the presence of representatives of all the supervising institutions (the CNRS, Université Côte d’Azur, and the University of Corte).
